Flounders' Folly

Sightseeing attraction | Craven Arms | England | United Kingdom

Flounders' Folly is a distinctive stone tower located on Callow Hill near Craven Arms, Shropshire, England. The tower was built in 1838 by Benjamin Flounders, a wealthy merchant and Quaker from Yorkshire who inherited an estate in Culmington. Standing at approximately 24 meters in height,

History and Purpose
The exact purpose of the tower is not clearly documented, but it is believed that Benjamin Flounders had it built to mark the boundaries between four large estates and possibly to celebrate his 70th birthday. Another theory suggests that the tower served as a lookout point from which Flounders could survey the surrounding landscape and his lands.

After Flounders' death in 1846, the tower gradually fell into disrepair. By the 1980s, it was in a dangerous state, and in 1987, the crenellated top collapsed. In 2001, the Flounders' Folly Trust acquired the tower and began restoration work, which was completed in 2005. Since then, the tower has been open to the public, offering visitors the chance to enjoy the impressive views.

Architecture and Construction
Flounders' Folly is a square tower made of local stone with a crenellated top, displaying typical features of neo-Gothic architecture. The solid construction and use of regional materials blend harmoniously with the surrounding landscape, emphasizing the historical significance of the structure.

Views and Surroundings
From the top of the tower, visitors have a 360-degree panoramic view of the picturesque Shropshire landscape. Visible landmarks include the Shropshire Hills, the Long Mynd, the Clee Hills, and the Welsh mountains. On clear days, the view extends to the Brecon Beacons and the Malvern Hills. The surroundings of Callow Hill are rich in flora and fauna, inviting visitors to enjoy extensive walks.

Visitor Experience
The tower is accessible via several signposted hiking trails that lead through the charming landscape. A popular starting point is the Discovery Centre in Craven Arms, from which a marked path leads to the tower. Along the way, hikers have plenty of opportunities to enjoy nature and learn more about local history.

Flounders' Folly is a fascinating example of England's historical buildings, providing insight into the region's history and culture. A visit to the tower is not only worthwhile for history enthusiasts but also for nature lovers and hikers who wish to experience the beauty of the Shropshire landscape.

Great views on a winter morning run up here on Boxing Day 2024. The path up from the car park is recommended over the rutted and muddy switchbacks. Despite the tower being closed, the views were still amazing.

Enjoyed a challenging walk up the steep route and a leisurely descent down the gentle route. The friendly volunteer ensured safety and order among visitors.

Opt for the easier route up as the other way is almost vertical. Still, it's a nice walk with beautiful views at the top.

The steep route is truly steep. Opt for the easy route for a more pleasant ascent.

Pleasant walk with plenty of stairs leading to the top, but the view makes it all worth it.

The Folly has two approach paths, one wild and the other through the woods. It was disappointing that the tower wasn't open upon arrival, but others seemed to have a private viewing. Despite this, the views from the tower are reportedly great.

A lovely walk up to the folly on a beautiful day. The folly was open with a volunteer providing information and history. The overgrown surrounding paths made it challenging to find the trig point.

Scenic walks up both sides of the hill, with the view being worth it at the top. The tower is open on the last Sunday of every month.

A nice short walk, but it's best to avoid the steep route unless you are young, agile, and adventurous. It's more of a difficult scramble than a walk.

A steady walk up through the woods to Flounders Folly. Always seen it from the A49 but never visited before.

A fantastic spot not too far from Craven Arms. Only open for climbing on the last Sunday of the month and bank holidays. Donations are welcome.

Lovely location! I recommend visiting for sunrise. It takes about 30 minutes to climb up from the road, which can be slippery and wet. If not in a rush to leave, a long walking route at sunrise would be ideal.

Parked at the base of the folly and took the easier route up, which was not steep at all. Walked back down via the path at the front of the tower for some variety. Although steep in parts, the walk ends on the road, where you turn right to return to the car park at the base of the folly. The views are fantastic.

Although it wasn't open when I visited, I wasn't surprised as the opening times for 2022 are available online and on a board at the bottom. The only drawback is its limited opening times. It would be beneficial for it to be open on Saturdays when more people are out and about. Nevertheless, the walk in the area was very pleasant and peaceful.

Among all the random towers on hills in remote locations I've seen, this one ranks in the top 10. Avoid the steep climb to the top as it becomes cliff-like.

A great short walk, even if you take the direct route (1/5 steep). There is interesting information and history at the top, and it's worth being there when it's open once a month.

This is not just a folly, but a commendable asset for past, present, and future generations - much like Christmas. Mr. Flounders had great foresight and never shied away from a challenge. The climb up the steel steps inside the tower, leading to the viewing area at the top, can be a slight challenge especially on wet days. The views, both real and imagined, are fantastic on a cloudy winter day. It's advisable to check the website for opening times, as the tower is only open for one or two days each month. Cheers to Mr. Flounders 👏

What may be considered a folly by one is a viewing platform for another. On a clear day, it's worth visiting for the panoramic views of Shropshire's AONB.
